MISFIRE AT CAMPGROUND 6
When Setting Up A Class C Fireworks Show Help is Needed With the 911 B/S these
substitutes still draw and ahh and ooh but to put on an effective show quantity is needed
as well as quality
When doing "shoots"
(shows) think of fireworks as flowers., and the shoot as flower arrangements or
bouquets There is a big difference between class "C" and class "B" If
you have participated in large 3 to 15 inch mortar shells shoots .Its very
different with the 1 1/2 to 2 inch shells . You can bring your audience much closer to the
action .Its a more intimate show which is hard to accept by those used to larger shells. As
a torch , lead me to a piano bar singer, I prefer the interaction between the audience in
small rooms. This is why where you set up a class C shoot and what you shoot is important.
This 4th we did a shoot for a Wisconsin campground which had given up
on large shells because of their expence, the need for standby equipment, and other
factors. To do it right the 75 assorted class C shells plus 15 gerbs and mines called for 5
adults .to shoot and set up .A supplier to the campground had paid for the shoot and was
suppose to supply 3 shooters that never did show up
In some ways the site was ideal. It consisted of a 3 or 4 acre cleared, mowed
grassy field leading into a pond of about the grass field size with a nice beach. The
shooting took place at the far end of the pond and about 500 feet from the viewers at the
insistence of the campground owner.who was used to class B shows but was a shoot over
water.
The over water shoot was fine for the aerials( think of these as
lillys) but not for the (gerbs) or fountains, or multi shot "cakes (mines) (think of
these as everything between Moss Roses to Zinnas) because 500 ft was too far away from the
viewer .Part of any show are gerbs or fountains which brighten any ocassion not just the
Fourth. But a birthday, a highlight at a Bar-B-Que, or a picnic .Kids will allways
remember that ocassion. These are used as filler so that aerial tubes get
charged up and ready to fire after the gerbs are spent.
What I wanted to do was a split shoot. The grass led into a beach where
the pond was shallow and hip high about 30 or 40 feet out .I wanted to set garbage drums
in the pond and use that for the gerbs, and roman candles and have a crew work the aerials
at the far end of the pond Not being able to get the additional help only
circumstances prevented me from telling em "Kiss It". Which is why the
campgrounds name is not mentioned in this article. To get the most effect of off of
the water reflection at the furthur end of the pond 3inch "pooper tubes"
which the campground owner had from earlier class B shoots were used. and the inch and a
half shells broke about 10 ft above the water made a nice display. The only problem was
that many double break and speciality shells that should have gone into the 2"
tubes wound up in those "pooper tubes" because 2 guys were doing the job
of 5.Plus there were lulls in the shooting. The lesson here Get Help
Show tips fireworks, require respect, In my poem below I
emphasize safety .The era was the late 40's and early 50's( when it was legal ) in my old
Chicago neighborhood Bridgeport In doing a regular
show the fireing area is roped off a handy garden hose nearby and at least 20 feet (for
large fountains) aerial items more area) away from the viewer. There is an old myth about
roman candles, you don't have to mix the powder! DON'T HOLD THEM IN YOUR HAND , Unless you
let your kid play with matches, small children should not hold sparklers let alone throw
them. Alcohol and fireworks don't mix this is where most incidents occur.

Setting up a 2003 class C show)
The 18 inch
"Spinning Wheel" Looks like a roman candle with a hole in the center (Hunan
fwks) is excellent but needs several washers as spacers to work effectively which is not
furnished. When working offers a great display. 36" Morning Glories have a dross (hot
ash dripping) problem best to stick in the ground or hang over deck away from holder..36
" sparklers should be ignighted by propane torch.or another smaller sparkler very
little or no drossing problem can be used safely on a deck or even on a moving boat
excellent for Venetian night celebration.
Crazy Aces roman candle (5 shot cannister of Lieuling type) has a
cannister drop another reason never hold a roman candle in your hand( see my poem ) but
outside of that offers a nice display. Just don't stand under it after (or any roman
candle for that matter) ignighting
.Brothers has introduced a fantastic line of small Festival Ball sized shells
that double peony break, have reports, just like downtown. Small Festival Balls (6pk) are no
longer color marked but still break far better than most sky rockets and are in the better
assortments.Westlake Rockets offer a decent display but can and do drop, if quality keeps
dropping they'll go the way of the PoSing which is now way over rated. One of the best
performing rockets was the Japanese made Emerald Meteor which succumed to the cheaper
Chinese knock offs and no longer around.Sky Bomb rockets go high give a nice display.
Another recent item
introduced from Cannon Brand is their Mini Howitzer, its a # 1 sized ball canister 10 pack
of mini mortars each labeled with an peony type effect shell furnished with a sturdy
paper tube. These should be in any assortment and recomended for city and suburban
areas . These were obtained from Victory

STUPIDITY NOT SPARKLERS CAUSED DEATHS IN R.I.SHOW LOUNGE....
If your going to use
SFX pyrotechnics in a show know what your using. Those weren't "big sparklers"
as reported by some of the media. Those were large gerbs or fountains which are used
outdoors certainly not suitable for use in confined spaces If nothing else the smoke from
them would drive the audience to the exits. Which the audience couldn't find .There are many reasons why death tolls
are so high in these circumstances. But in every case it has always been exits. The other reason is our reliance on petro chemical
building materials, plastics, in case of a fire the
proliferation of such material in a home is bad enough but their use should be prohibited by building code where large
groups congregate

Report From
"Across the Pond"
Graham Vincent of the Fletching Bonfire Society
sent us an interesting insight on the origins, organization, and purposes of Bonfire
Societies in England. Where celebrations using fireworks is a group effort put on by a
unit something akin to clubs in the US. UK Bonfire societies are quite a bit more and seem
to have other interests than creating interesting fireworks. .It is reprinted intact with
this reserved comment "In Englands turbulent history members of which group wasn't
burned at the stake, thrown into a pit, or tossed off a tower ? They certainly know how to
deal with the pope.! Frankly I think its a sad waste of good powder.
Hello there,
Sorry its been a while but here goes.......there are around 30 " Bonfire Societies " in Sussex Southern England and they are all self funding, and it is only in Sussex that do this, elsewhere in the country it will be private, company or local council firework displays only with a few exceptions notably in the north of Scotland where they build a replica Viking long boat and then burn it after parading it around in full viking wear, I dont know much about this and did have a magazine cutting but cannot find it at the moment.Any way back to us, basically a Society will spend all year raising money via social evenings, quiz nights, jumble sales ( selling of second user items ) running licensed bars or barbecues for outside events, in fact any thing if it brings in a bit of cash.
We have what is called the Bonfire Season which runs from mid September till mid November with every Saturday night starting around 6pm with a Fancy Dress competition then around 7.30pm hundreds sometimes thousands will form up and parade around the village or town bearing live torches ( Sticks about 2-3ft long with either sacking or board at the end and dipped in paraffin and lit ) everbody will have one including the children if they are responsible enough no matter what the age there will be the sound of bangers being let of within the ranks and Chinese crackers going off and also distress flares, some places more so than others depending on the society and the local police ! , towards the end of the parade the main society will have a banner made up with lance work and non projectile fireworks to be let of in the street, in the good old days one would use romans, gerbs etc but Health and Safety and the Insurance are all clamping down, I use to do it but now only use lancework and flares.
We will then go onto the firesite, we will have prime position for viewing etc and the public will be behind us as it is us the fireworks are for, within the confines of us lot there will be shit loads of bangers ( small, big, homemade, mascalatas,Chinese crackers etc ) going off, it can be quite scary and have been hurt a few times ( only minor stings and burns ) But I Love It ! once that settles down then it will be the firework display, some societies will have made tableaux's depicting a current topic and that is stuffed full of fireworks and saved for the end.On the fancy dress side of things fo example some guys will spend all year making theirs having a new one every year, I and my wife are not quite so mad but my wife's one took 6 months on and off to make last year and she is just about to start on mine for this year ! , anything goes really for the outfit and I have gone out as a Mexican, munchcin, grimreaper to name a few in the past and this year it will be Mozart.
The main reason we have our celebrations on different weekends is so we can go to others and relax and enjoy others doing the work on that night but most importantly we will all converge on Lewes on the 5th November no matter what day it falls on unless it is a Sunday then it will be held on the 4th November Saturday, my wife was born on a bonfire night that year, we will then expect to see around 5,000 people in costumes ( this is the preferred word ) many marching bands split between the five societies of Lewes and upwards of 70,000 spectators all crammed into a very small town, the town is closed to all traffic from around 5pm when it all starts till about 12pm to let the 30 plus processions wind itself around the town heading towards their firesites on different sides of the town 5 firesites 5 bonfires 5 firework displays... COOL !
That is about the basic as I can get....there are loads of bonfire sites on the web try bonfire society..lewes bonfire..lewes celebrations..sussex bonfire etc........as to why we do it , it all started with the protestants being burnt at the stake then guy fawkes, prince of orange I could go on but I don't understand fully and there are no bad feelings between the catholics or church of england except for the odd dickhead that cannot think for him/herself, it serves as a reminder to the freedom we have now and to honour the dead inc the wars which all the Lewes Societies will lay a poppy wreath at the war memorial on the night and some will carry 20ft flaming crosses ( 17 in all ) to honour those that were burnt at the stake and we blow up the Pope !
Nobody knows why it is only done in Lewes and surrounding areas and I don't think we ever will, many times it has been tried to stop it especially in the 1800s but it has always gone on except the wars and once in the 60s due to flooding.
And no it is not a scottish thing.............that is my other hobby I am a Pipe Band Drummer with a Band that was made up of ex services .... Black Watch,Scots Guards,Irish Guards and civilians like my self we put on performances for charity fairs concerts etc and wear full Highland No 1s or daydress if you look at http://www.fletchingbonfiresociety.co.uk/lewes.htm you will see our dress I hope you have enough info to play with here and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask

also means fingerprinting, you need a place thats approved by the feds to store the stuff.

This Old
House Trailer
by The Wizard of The Works
There
are hundreds of thousands out there they were America's answer to the cheap quick housing
situation. Where they really filled the bill was that those units built in the late
70's and 80s were really cheaply and quickly built and were reflecting the times why
and when the foreign car market began to open up.
If you examine their construction, they have nothing in
common with the stick type construction used during that time.16" 2X4 centers,
galvanized water pipe, hardwood flooring, fire resistant dry wall, are just some
examples. If you do own one of these and use it as a first or second home don't order that
dumpster Time to trash trailer trash talk, you can fix em up . Think of what you
have as a "shell home"
Creating a safety
zone
First safety, whenever severe weather is announced there is always an
advisory for those living in "house trailers" and mobile homes to seek shelter.
If your in an isolated area or where a shelter is not available pick a windowless room ,
which is usually the bathroom and begin by reinforcing the doorway.
Cut up two pieces of 2 x4 so that they measure at least to the jam
above the door. Place one 2x4 on each side of the frame and screw them securely to the
door frame. Then cut a piece of 2x4 that sungly fits above the door between the two
2x4's you have just installed and using 4" woodscrews fasten that securely to
each of the 2x4s and into the jam above the door, also toe in the 2X4s(drive the long
screws in on an angle) into the floor.During time of weather alert DO NOT
CLOSE THE DOOR Ideally if the four walls in this location could be ½ inch
4 x 8 plywood sheets safety of course would be enhanced.
The Bathroom
Replacing the water
lines Installing a shower
A step in shower allows anyone who is handicaped, or anyone else to
bath quickly without difficulty It may also increase the value of the mobile home. To
begin with to install a step in shower in a mobile is not an easy job. There is not
just the water lines to move but also drainage. Depending upon the style and length
and width of your mobile depends on where the water and drain lines are. When this was
done no pictures were being taken therefore in presenting this article I'm going to have
to resort to black and white sketches.
There is no doubt those lines are running from the wash basin behind the
bathtub wall and underneath the bathtub. In this case these can be accessed from the
adjoining bedroom closet. This is where the rerouting of one drain and water lines will
go.
Two drain lines will be needed. One 1½" line from the basin is
routed and mounted to the closet wall to the outlet where the old basin and tub line
drained , The other a 2"drain line for the shower "underneath the
trailer from the shower to the main. The reason for this is to keep the basin
line from overflowing into the shower and
If you have ever woundered why sometimes the when the sink basin would drain,
water would temporally back up into the tub,or if the toilet got stuffed up sewage from
the toilet would back up into the tub. That is the reason.
P traps are also needed and the drain pitch should be
considered. Usually draining pitch is not a problem because most
bathrooms are in the rear and the drain pitch is already established from the kitchen
running to the septic field or sewage line. The sketches show previous location of the
drains and the new location. Note in the new shower drain location .The hook up to the
main should be where the line is going towards the septic or sewer and is forward of the
toilet T It is connected on the top of the line not on the side or bottom. This is done to
prevent any backup should the toilet get blocked
The emphasis on drains is important thats because its the first thing when tackling
a project like this must be answered.and the answer is you must cut a hole in the bathroom
floor. If you want a walk in shower there is no way of getting around it that is what must
be done. The sketches below first shows the layout of the bath and the changes in
the floor plan. In this plan the only things that were moved were the water and drain
lines and of course the bathtub removed. Bear in mind you can also expand the size of the
bathroom by adjusting the size of the .adjoining room It depends on your
circumstances. If you want or need more info on this let us know
.

To
remove the bathtub is a simple matter.Once it is removed it will become clear about the
drain situation. A hole was cut in the floor to accommodate the "P" (effluent
gas) trap for the bathtub and unless you want to enlarge the bathroom is your drain
spot for your shower base.
The materials needed for this project were:
31" square shower base
2", 1½" and 4" CPVC drain pipe, T"s, elbows, and other parts
½"concrete board, This is an on
going project under construction
Outside Door Replacement
Yes you can replace those carboard front doors with a full
sized 32" steel doors offered by the major stores such as Menards or Home Depot. And
make the place not only safer but more attractive. The secret is to fit the door into the
jam take a sawsall (reciprocal saw) and cut 2"into the 2 X 6 header which runs
the length of the unit above the jam. Then with a wood chisel trim out the wood then
insert the furnished jam for the width of the door.
Recently I had an appraiser come in for an appraisal and he kept staring at the
door as well at the shower woundering how it was done. He never asked and I never told but
you read it here ...

sketches, and photos, are being worked up
